Couples Therapy
How Couples CBT Works
Couples CBT is a structured, short-term, and goal-oriented therapy that typically involves both partners working together in sessions. The therapist helps partners:
- Recognize how thoughts, beliefs, and interpretations about each other influence emotions and behaviours.
- Identify and break negative interaction cycles (e.g., criticism–defensiveness, withdrawal–pursuit patterns).
- Develop healthier communication strategies and conflict-resolution skills.
- Foster empathy, respect, and mutual understanding.
- Practice behavioural changes that reinforce trust, intimacy, and partnership.
When necessary, individual sessions may be included to address specific issues that impact the relationship.
Issues Addressed in Couples CBT
Couples CBT can be effective for a range of difficulties, including:
- Communication problems and repeated conflict cycles
- Intimacy and sexual difficulties
- Parenting disagreements and family stressors
- Financial strain and decision-making conflict
- Anger, resentment, or trust issues
- Infidelity and betrayal recovery
- Adjustment to major life changes (e.g., relocation, illness, career shifts)
Preventive Use
Couples CBT is not limited to relationships in crisis. It is also used proactively by couples who wish to:
- Strengthen their bond and emotional closeness
- Improve communication and problem-solving skills
- Engage in premarital counseling, clarifying expectations and addressing potential challenges before marriage
Booking Process
Please note that the process begins with two individual 45-minute assessment sessions (one for each partner), followed by a joint 60-minute session.
During the joint session, the therapist integrates the information gathered from both assessments, provides a clinical overview of the relationship dynamics, and discusses the treatment plan and next steps.
Sessions are available in person at any of our branches or online via Zoom.
